Payoneer was built specifically for the cross-border freelance economy and has been around since 2005 — long enough that it has deep integrations with major freelance marketplaces including Upwork, Fiverr, Toptal, and Amazon. If you work on one of these platforms, Payoneer is often the default or preferred payout method, which is worth factoring into your decision. The fee structure has a few layers that matter in practice. When receiving from a Payoneer client (another Payoneer account), the fee is 1%. When receiving from a marketplace or payment service, fees vary by partner. When receiving via payment request (essentially an invoice link), the payer's card or bank account is charged separately. When withdrawing to a local bank account, Payoneer charges up to 2% FX conversion on top of the transaction fee, plus a $1.50 flat fee for same-currency withdrawals (or $4.00 if your balance is under $400). There is also a $29.95 annual fee, waived if you receive over $2,000 per year. For freelancers in developing markets, Payoneer has historically had broader country coverage than Wise. It supports withdrawal to local bank accounts in over 190 countries, including markets in Africa, South Asia, Southeast Asia, and Eastern Europe where Wise has thinner coverage. This geographic reach is genuinely useful and is one of the main reasons freelancers in those regions use Payoneer even though the fee structure is less elegant. The Payoneer Mastercard is a secondary option for those who want to spend their earnings directly without converting — useful if you have regular USD or EUR expenses and want to avoid a round-trip conversion. The platform does not handle contracts, invoicing, or tax documents. It is a payment rail and wallet, not an HR or compliance tool. KYC is standard: government ID plus proof of address for some regions. Business accounts require company registration documentation. One ongoing complaint from freelancers in certain markets is that Payoneer has been known to freeze or limit accounts without clear explanation, particularly in countries it considers higher risk. If your country is flagged, expect slower support and more documentation requests.
