Deel is fundamentally different from payment platforms like Wise or Payoneer — it is a compliance and HR infrastructure company that handles paying people in it. The distinction matters because Deel charges the hiring company, not the freelancer. If your client is paying you through Deel, you get onboarded as a contractor, complete your KYC, and then receive payments through Deel's payout network at no platform cost to you. The platform was founded in 2019 and grew quickly by solving a real problem: companies wanted to hire contractors in countries where they had no legal entity, payroll infrastructure, or tax knowledge. Deel acts as the layer in between — it generates locally compliant contractor agreements, manages invoicing on behalf of the contractor, handles withholding requirements, and sends payment. For freelancers, the practical experience is largely determined by the withdrawal method. Deel supports bank transfers (in most countries), Wise transfers, Payoneer, Coinbase (USDC on multiple chains), and the Deel Card. The FX conversion markup on local currency withdrawals is typically 0–3% depending on the corridor, and there is no platform fee charged to the contractor. Deel works in 150+ countries, which is expansive on paper, but the depth of local support varies considerably. In well-covered markets like Eastern Europe, Latin America, and parts of Southeast Asia, payments arrive quickly in local currency. In smaller markets, bank transfers may still route through SWIFT and land with intermediary fees that Deel does not control. The full KYC process is more extensive than a simple payment wallet — you need government ID, proof of address, and tax documentation, and some countries require additional compliance steps. This is because Deel is generating a legal employment or contractor relationship, not just moving money. Deel is best suited for freelancers with ongoing engagements where the client already uses or is willing to adopt Deel. It is not useful for one-off invoices or clients who want to pay via a simpler method.
