PayPal is the oldest and most widely recognized online payment network in the world, founded in 1998 and available in over 200 countries and territories. For freelancers, it has two main roles: it is the platform your clients are most likely to already have an account on, and it is the platform that will cost you the most in fees if you use it for international work. When a client sends you money internationally using PayPal, you pay a receiving fee of 3.49% + $0.49 for standard commercial transactions, plus a 1.50% cross-border surcharge on top of that for international payments. When you convert that balance to your local currency to withdraw, PayPal applies a currency conversion spread that can reach 4%. Adding these up, a typical international freelance payment can cost 5%–8.99% in total fees — a significant slice of your invoice. That said, PayPal has genuine strengths. Its brand recognition is unmatched, and many clients — particularly in North America and Western Europe — feel comfortable sending payments via PayPal when they would not want to set up a bank wire or learn a new platform. For small or occasional projects, the friction advantage can outweigh the fee cost. PayPal's geographic coverage is broad in terms of available countries, but the depth of local functionality varies. In some markets, funds can be withdrawn to a local bank account easily. In others, PayPal may be available for sending but receiving is restricted or requires the Business account tier. Several countries have significant transaction limits or blocked status for specific use cases. For recurring freelance work with known clients, PayPal is generally not the cost-optimal choice when alternatives like Wise or Payoneer are available. Where PayPal makes more sense is when the client relationship is one-off, the client already uses PayPal, and the invoice size is small enough that a percentage fee difference does not justify the friction of introducing a new payment method. KYC starts light (email + payment method verification) but ID verification is required once transaction volume thresholds are crossed.
