Stripe is a payment infrastructure company primarily built for businesses that want to accept payments from customers — not a platform for individual freelancers to receive client payments. This distinction matters because Stripe's position in freelance payment flows is as a backend that someone else has built on top of, rather than something you set up as a freelancer to receive an invoice. The most common scenario where Stripe is relevant to a freelancer: you use a product built on Stripe Connect (a Stripe-powered platform where businesses pay contributors or contractors through a marketplace), or your client uses a Stripe-powered invoicing or billing tool. In these cases, Stripe Global Payouts handles the distribution — you would receive funds as a payout to your bank account from the platform's Stripe account. Stripe is available for businesses in 46+ countries, with full payment acceptance in most of them. Global Payouts for recipients (as opposed to accepting payments) covers a somewhat narrower set of countries. The FX markup on local currency payouts is 0.5–2% depending on the corridor, and the business absorbs the 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction fee plus a 1.5% surcharge for international cards. For a freelancer thinking about setting up their own Stripe account to invoice clients directly: this is possible and works well in countries where Stripe is fully available, but it requires more technical setup than a consumer platform like Payoneer or Wise. You would create a Stripe account, generate payment links or invoices, and have the client pay by card. You then receive payouts to your bank account on a 2–7 day rolling basis. The per-transaction fee your client pays is significant for small invoices. KYC for Stripe business accounts is thorough: government-issued ID, bank account verification, and a tax ID or business registration. Some countries are invite-only or in preview access, which can make availability unpredictable. Stripe's real strength is for freelancers who have productized their services — courses, templates, design assets, subscription consulting — where accepting card payments from many clients is the actual use case.
